It can be easy to get caught up in thinking our flooring is made of a singular material.Flooring panels

But the process of creating flooring is complex and involves an array of various materials, techniques, and chemicals.

How can you ensure that the materials and chemicals in your flooring aren’t harming your health and polluting your home?

Luckily, there are ways to gain a bit more insight into what your flooring material is made out of so that you can make an informed decision before you buy it.

The Process to Better Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)

The IAQ of your home can be affected by a multitude of factors:

        • Outdoor pollution seeping in.
        • Garbage cans.
        • Pet dander and waste.
        • How often you perform cleaning chores such as dusting or vacuuming.

These are just some of the many factors that we can find affecting everyday IAQ, and our floors, though often overlooked, can be a significant contributor.

The way we improve our home’s IAQ is by buying smart and knowing what to look for.

Flooring companies are now turning to comply with both in-house and independent IAQ certifications and tests to help ensure consumers of what they are buying for their flooring needs to reach specific standards.

So, how does it all work?

There are a variety of certifications such as Green Label Plus, GREENGUARD, or FloorScore, but the ideas are all the same:

        • Manufacturers submit their floor products for testing, including a full, detailed report describing the manufacturing process and materials used.
        • Additional information is collected, and due diligence is conducted, including onsite processes and visits.
        • The flooring is tested, and corrections are made when necessary.
        • Once corrections have been made, and the flooring meets the standards required, a certification may be awarded.
        • From there, manufacturers are required to maintain these standards and are checked to ensure IAQ is kept in compliance. Through scientific methods and rigorous trial and error, flooring companies can then present a better product to the customer and limit the number of unwanted materials that are in the end product.

        Health Issues and VOCs

The EPA has conducted many studies on environmental and health effects on a variety of topics, so it should be no surprise that IAQ is quite a big topic of discussion for their organization.

It has been found that many household materials can leave harmful chemicals known as VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).

Fatigue, nausea, discomfort in your sinuses, and more can be caused due to the release of VOCs.

Thankfully, due to the demand from consumers and the commitment by flooring companies, these adverse health effects and harmful compounds can be mitigated and eliminated from your personal space.
